A S.T.E.M. Initiative for Africa

COVID 19 Response

Enlightenment on how to prevent the transmission of the virus by taking precautionary measures while performing their duties.

Security personnel deployed to strategic locations expend enormous effort into enforcing the lockdown. At checkpoints, law enforcement personnel come in contact with several people daily. This necessitates a constant supply of hand sanitizers, face masks, and hand gloves while on duty. Our team’s research showed that sanitizers and masks were not used by most law enforcement agencies (Police and FRSC) at checkpoints. The only policeman we found with a 45ml hand sanitizer, said he purchased it from a local store himself.

At this point, we cannot afford to leave security agencies unprotected because not only do they stand at a high risk of being infected, but they may also transfer the virus to uninfected persons who come in contact with them.

While on an official trip, our president at Science Ignite Africa, Pharm. Adeoluwa Adediran was stopped at a checkpoint where he handed over his ID card to a police officer who received it with his bare hands. The policeman was then educated on how he was putting himself and others at risk by that action and enlightened on how to prevent the transmission of the virus by taking precautionary measures while performing their duties.

To this end, spurred by several similar encounters with our security personnel, On the 17th and 18th of May, Science Ignite Team embarked on a Covid19 Response Initiative and donated hand sanitizers to law enforcement agencies (who also somewhat at the frontline of the battle against COVID-19) at various checkpoints along Ife-Ibadan-Lagos express way.

During the course of the donation, the security agencies were again reminded of the precautionary measures that must be consistently observed in order to protect themselves while protecting others with an emphasis placed on the importance of maintaining social distancing as they are at high risk of contracting the virus.
